Interested in applying to be a PhD student?

Students interested in joining the Graduate Program in Bacteriology apply primarily through two routes: the PhD Program in Biological and Biomedical Sciences (BBS) at Harvard Medical School or the Biological Sciences in Public Health (BPH) PhD Program at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Students accepted to either of these programs can join the GPiB in their first year. Students from other Harvard graduate programs who join GPiB-affiliated labs are also eligible.

Biological and Biomedical Sciences Program (BBS)

The Biological and Biomedical Sciences Program is a collection of 9 basic science departments and specialized research programs at Harvard Medical School. With over 300 PhD and MD-PhD students performing thesis research in more than 300 labs, BBS provides students a diverse array of research options and basic coursework as a foundation to their graduate studies. Please click here for information on applying to the BBS program.

Biological Sciences of Public Health Program (BPH)

The Biological Sciences in Public Health Program trains biological scientists focused on understanding, preventing and treating diseases affecting large populations. BPH combines coursework on biochemical, cell biological and genetic approaches with core quantitative disciplines like biostatistics and epidemiology. Please click here for information on applying to the BPH program.

GPiB strives to welcome and support students of all backgrounds and identities. To learn more about application resources, affinity groups, and other supports for Harvard PhD students, please visit this page.
